National Day of Prayer in Solidarity with Indigenous Peoples 2025

Since 2002 in Canada, the National Day of Prayer in Solidarity with Indigenous Peoples has been celebrated each year on December 12, the memorial of Our Lady of Guadalupe, proclaimed Patroness of the Americas in 1946 by Pope Pius XII. This devotion dates back to 1531, when the Virgin appeared as an Aztec princess to a humble Indigenous farmer, Saint Juan Diego. To mark this day, Mission chez nous is offering suggestions for liturgical settings so that every faith community can join in this movement of solidarity.

  • A prayer intention (short prayer) that may be included in the Prayers of the Faithful (during Mass on December 12, or the Sunday Mass before or after that date).
  • A general prayer (longer), which may be read by the assembly (during Mass on December 12, or the Sunday Mass before or after that date). It may be projected on a screen or printed and distributed during the celebrations. In addition, the prayer may be shared on your community’s social media or newsletter — and we encourage you to do so!
