Like the wind in our sails || sunday fabruary 27th eighth Sunday of the ordinary time year C

In this example, Jesus wants to illustrate the difference between the disciple and the teacher. The teacher is the one who has a special light in his or her life and the disciple is the one who has chosen this particular light to move forward in his or her life. When we own something we are in a position to decide to share it with someone who can use it. This is the nature of the relationship between a teacher and a disciple – caring and welcoming.

Jesus then talks about a plank and a speck of straw in our eye. He seems to want to help us understand that we often see more clearly others than we see ourselves. We have no trouble seeing the speck of straw in the life of another and we often take pleasure in pointing it out to him or her. However, in our own lives we are frequently blind to our own shortcomings, to the plank in our own eye, although we can see clearly the speck in the other’s eye. À little more truth and humility on our part would improve our relations with others.

Where is Jesus going with these two parables? He is inviting us look clearly on ourselves and on others. Those who are called upon to be teachers, have within themselves a special light, an experience or a particular talent. Jesus is also telling us that in our human relationships, we need to demonstrate honesty, respect and lucidity.

Jesus has not finished: ‘The mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”

Our words have power and this power is a double-edged sword. They have the power of life or death, love or hate. Each of us is made up of good and evil. We have to choose which of these we listen to. Jesus is inviting us to choose the good in ourselves over the evil. But sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference! It is so easy for us to lean toward our own prejudices and to listen uncritically to the fake news and fake ideas which surround us, particularly on social media. This takes a toll on our heart which gradually hardens and closes. Our words reflect this hardening and reflect our inner state. Our words hurt, condemn and shut down dialogue with others.

When my heart is open my lips speak of abundance as the Word of God speaks

of abundance. As did Jesus, so should I speak with others to help them discover the good and the love which resides in them. I should use my words to inspire and to encourage respect, harmony and peace; to help others build their words on the Word of the Lord. So let us all ask ourselves, “What is my heart full of”?

In his video message for the annual campaign to support parishes (tithing), Bishop Paul-André Durocher reminds us how parishes are vibrant and dynamic, as well as places where the wealth, talents and gifts of all can be shared. "Following Jesus' example, everyone can make a difference in their community by sharing their time, talents and treasures."

  • 2024 Easter message from Bishop Paul-André Durocher

How I wish I could experience Easter without having to endure Good Friday!

How pleasant it would be to lose weight without dieting or exercising, to master an art without practising for hours, or to succeed in a project without devoting so much energy and resources to it! It would be wonderful to be loved without having to give of myself to another, to be forgiven without having to ask for forgiveness, to be reconciled without having to overcome my pride.
