A word from Archbishop Paul-André Durocher

A word from Archbishop Paul-André Durocher

The government’s new requirement regarding vaccination passports makes some people happy and dismays others. It is popular with people who fear catching the virus and who, for this reason, stay away from places of worship. For them, this requirement ensures the security required to come to church to celebrate the sacraments. The same regulation, however, is a source of pain for those who, for whatever reason, do not want to be vaccinated: they find themselves prevented from participating in the same celebrations.
I deeply sympathize with both groups. How I wish everyone could come together to celebrate together! Even though the virulence of the pandemic causes this division between vaccinated and unvaccinated, let us believe that our unity in Jesus Christ runs deeper than this division.
I therefore invite the vaccinated to consider the unvaccinated with respect and compassion. The current situation is difficult for them, they need to be carried in the prayer and experience understanding. I also invite the unvaccinated to recognize the desire of the vaccinated to ensure their safety and that of their families. Obviously, not being allowed into church is a sacrifice, but that sacrifice can become a gesture of love when you think it allows others to attend. So let us remain united despite this temporary separation.
I recognize the right and the duty of the government to seek the common good and to ensure the security of all. Although I might deplore certain aspects of the new directives, I believe that it is our civic duty to obey legitimate laws. I invite all of us to support our elected leaders by respecting their directives and by doing our part to reduce the impact of this pandemic in our communities. Given the complexity of this health crisis, everything indicates that much remains to be done. The response to this crisis can only be community-based, but everyone, wherever they are, can contribute.
May the feast of the Redeemer’s birth help us to get back to basics, whatever our situation, to put this passing situation into perspective and to renew our hope in the One who assures us of his peace and joy.
Despite everything, have a blessed Christmas!
+ Paul-André Durocher

An invitation to the unvaccinated faithful: Those who wish to do so can participate partially in the eucharistic celebrations at St-Joseph Cathedral on Solemnities and Sundays. Park behind the Church and tune in to 92.3 FM. You will be able to follow the mass (in French only) in your car. At the time of Communion, a eucharistic minister will come outside to the foot of the iron cross which is near the parking lot. You will be able to come forward for communion wearing your masks and respecting the two-meter rule. Please check the cathedral's website for times of mass.
For other parishes, please check with your parish to see if a celebration is broadcast online.
A clarification about unvaccinated volunteers: Simply being a parish volunteer does not automatically grant access to liturgical celebrations, you must be called to provide an essential service. The parish may decide to prioritize volunteers who are vaccinated to provide the services necessary for the liturgical celebration.
Priests will do their best to meet the spiritual needs of unvaccinated people in their homes. All precautions must be followed scrupulously.

  • 2024 Easter message from Bishop Paul-André Durocher

How I wish I could experience Easter without having to endure Good Friday!

How pleasant it would be to lose weight without dieting or exercising, to master an art without practising for hours, or to succeed in a project without devoting so much energy and resources to it! It would be wonderful to be loved without having to give of myself to another, to be forgiven without having to ask for forgiveness, to be reconciled without having to overcome my pride.
